AAUW Naperville Area is pleased to recognize Becky Simon as our 2024 Woman of the Year for advancing equity by serving as a strong organizational and community leader and establishing programs to provide opportunities for women and people of diverse backgrounds.
Becky will be honored at the AAUW Spring Awards Brunch and Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Bolingbrook Country Club.
Becky Simon serves as the President of the League of Women Voters of Illinois and has deep ties to both the League and AAUW, being a second-generation member. Her educational journey began at the AAUW preschool in Waukegan, Illinois, which remains active today.
Growing up as the daughter of an activist, Becky proudly wears her mother’s antiwar necklace, carrying on a tradition of advocating for gender equity and social justice. Her childhood experiences witnessing women’s efforts to enhance opportunities for their communities fueled her enduring commitment.
Within the League of Women Voters, Becky has spearheaded various initiatives. She has led studies on Naperville’s municipal board appointment process, advocated for modern voting equipment in DuPage County, and contributed to a task force dedicated to revamping the League’s membership structure nationwide.
Currently, Becky focuses on defending democracy amidst formidable challenges. This involves combatting misinformation, affirming the integrity of Illinois elections, and actively engaging with the media and public protests to highlight contemporary women’s issues.
Recognized for her leadership and community contributions, Becky has also been honored by DuPage NOW, a feminist advocacy organization. She resides in Naperville with her husband Bill and is a proud parent to three grown children.
