As many noted, law enforcement response to Black Lives Matter protests in the summer of 2020 was markedly different from the response to the mostly white protesters who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021. It becomes much easier to treat “others” with less respect if one’s implicit and explicit biases paint an entire group of people as less human. Professor Mueller discussed how such biases can be created and maintained even in the face of contradictory evidence and one’s own moral code. He also shared research suggesting how such entrenched biases slowly may be undone.
