Did Laura Adler (an American Fellowships, Dissertation Fellow), speaker at our May 2021 program, spark questions about AAUW’s Fellowship and Grants programs – How many are there? What disciplines are covered? Are they National and International? What are the requirements?
AAUW is providing almost $5 million in funding for fellowships and grants to over 260 recipients in the 2021-22 calendar years. This compares to $4 million in 2020-21 to 259 recipients. Currently Fellowship and Grants are provided in seven categories. Below is a brief description of each category. For more information see:

American Fellowships: Started in 1888, this is AAUW’s largest fellowship program and the oldest non-institutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States. Women pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations or conduct postdoctoral research, or who are preparing research for publication for eight consecutive weeks are awarded $6,000-$30,000. Three types of American Fellowships are available: Dissertation Fellowships, Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowships, and Short-Term Research Publication Grants.
Career Development Grants: This grant provides $2,000-$12,000 to women who hold a bachelor’s degree and are preparing to advance or change careers or re-enter the workforce in education, health and medical sciences, or social sciences. Applicants last degree must have been received eight years prior. Women of color and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields are given primary consideration.
Community Action Grants: Since 1972, this grant provides $3,000-$10,000 to individuals, AAUW branches, AAUW state organizations, and community-based nonprofits for innovative programs that promote education and equity through projects focused on encouraging girls to select, before entering college, the physical sciences or engineering as a career.
International Fellowships: This fellowship awards $18,000-$30,000 for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanents residents. It is available for both graduate and postgraduate studies to applicants who have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
International Projects Grant: To create lasting support around the globe, awards of $5,000-$7,000 are given to alumnae of AAUW’s International Fellowships program who are living in their home countries and pursuing community-based projects to improve the social advancement and economic empowerment of women and girls.
Research Publication Grant in Engineering, Medicine and Science: Although a strong publication record is a key to success in STEM fields, gender stereotypes and bias in these fields make it difficult for women to find the time and institutional support needed to publish their research. This grant of $10,000-$35,000 is intended to help women overcome these barriers. It is open to women scholars conducting basic research in engineering, medicine, or the physical sciences and who have a doctorate degree in one of those fields. Grantees are required to publish their research in a scholarly scientific publication and be listed as the primary author.
Selected Professions Fellowship: Established in 1970, this fellowship awards $5,000-$18,000 to women pursuing full-time study in a master’s or professional degree program in which women’s participation traditionally has been low. Fellowships are awarded in master’s programs for architecture, computer/information sciences, engineering, and mathematics/statistics. Fellowships in MBA, Law, and Doctorate in Medicine are restricted to women of color who are traditionally underrepresented in these fields.
