AAUW Naperville Area is pleased to announce that Maelyn (Mae) Gangi, a senior at Naperville Central High School, has been selected to receive the 2022 Cariya Reed Legacy Scholarship for $5,000. The scholarship honors Cariya Reed, a young girl whose life ended too soon due to domestic violence.

Mae’s 4.3 GPA is just one of her accomplishments. She has overcome tremendous stressors in her life, all while continuing to succeed academically, volunteer in the community, support her peers, and provide leadership in her chosen field of study–Psychology.

Mae has participated in school clubs, and helped to found the Mental Health Matters Club at Central. She serves on the board of her school’s National Honor Society chapter and is a teacher favorite due to her diligence and cheerfulness. Mae is a bright young woman who is self-assured and strong-willed enough for herself and her fellow women. She certainly will be a standout amongst her future classmates at Vanderbilt University.

Karen Kallmann is 2022 Angeline Gale Scholarship Winner

2022 Angeline Gale Scholarship Recipient Karen Kallmann

AAUW Naperville Area is pleased to name Karen Kallmann of Oswego, Illinois, as our 2022 Angeline Gale Scholarship awardee. Ms. Kallmann will receive $5,000 to help complete her degree in social work. The scholarship, established in 1971 in memory of educator and AAUW Naperville founder Angeline Gale, encourages women to pursue higher education, even when their progress has been interrupted.

Karen Kallmann grew up in a loving “extended” family, sharing both joys and sorrows. Their traditions linked the past to the present and provided a pathway of support for the future. She drew upon these as she went through a brutal divorce and endured numerous surgeries which severely impacted her both financially and physically. Regardless, with the help and encouragement of others she has worked full time to support her three girls while also pursuing a college education. In 2023, at the age of 50, she will receive her bachelor’s degree in social work from Aurora University. Karen intends to pursue her master’s degree and hopes to assist people in setting and achieving their goals. She believes that it is never too late to start again.
